Trichloroethylene

Everyone loves to go swimming. Getting you swimsuits packed up, driving to the pool and hanging with friends or family. But do you ever think about all the chemicals that are put into the pools to keep them clean. When you go swimming you are exposing yourself to this chemical that is coming into contact with your body. It also can be consumed if you swallow the water. And not many people get scared or worried about this, but trichloroethylene can actually be toxic and cause death. Many deaths are not caused from this due to humans not being exposed to enough trichloroethylene at a time. (3) The one scary thing that this chemical can cause if exposed to it to much long term is you can develop kidney cancer. (3)

Trichloroethylene can cause neurotoxicity effects. This can show if you start having heart disruptions, or it also changes the motor functions of the body. (8)
The LD50 for this chemical is :
Oral human LD50, 7 gm/kg(10)
Inhalation human LD50 2900 ppm(10)
Oral rat LD50 5650 mg/kg(10)

One of the main uses for this chemical and why its so popular especially for chlorine is because it is a very excellent and strong solvent. If you add it to water for example, it will keep the whole area its added to clean from bacteria's that are not wanted. Keeping it very clean. (9)

Basically what i am trying to get across with this is do not always believe everything you read or see on TV or the internet. Media love to post lots of articles and news that they see immediately for people to view, but it does not always mean that it is true.
